How PMP renewal actually works

PDUs are tracked through the CCR System (ccrs.pmi.org) using your existing PMI account. Submissions need a date, a provider, a duration, and a Talent Triangle category. PMI's audit rate is ~10% per cycle — substantially higher than CompTIA's — and they audit aggressively; documented evidence is non-optional.

Two fees during a cycle: a renewal fee at the end ($60 for PMI members, $150 for non-members). PMI membership itself is ~$129/year and unlocks free webinars, the PM Journal, and lower exam fees — most PMPs find membership ROI-positive purely on the renewal-fee delta alone.

The Talent Triangle math

PMI splits PDUs into three categories with mandatory minimums per cycle: Ways of Working (8 PDUs minimum) — technical project management, methodologies, frameworks. Power Skills (8 PDUs minimum) — leadership, communication, conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement. Business Acumen (8 PDUs minimum) — strategic alignment, organisational awareness, benefits realisation.

That's 24 PDUs locked into the Triangle. The remaining 36 can come from any combination — including more in any of the three categories. Most candidates over-index on Ways of Working (technical content is the easiest to find) and under-hit Power Skills until late in the cycle.

Practical note: a single activity often qualifies for multiple categories. A 1-hour webinar on "Leading distributed Agile teams" might count as 0.5 Ways of Working + 0.5 Power Skills. PMI accepts the split if you can justify it on submission.

Education PDUs vs Giving-Back PDUs

PDUs come in two flavours: Education (formal learning — courses, webinars, reading, mentoring received) and Giving Back (volunteering, content creation, teaching, mentoring given). Of the 60-PDU requirement, at least 35 must be Education. The remaining 25 can be Education or Giving Back, but Giving Back is capped at 25 per cycle — you can't volunteer your way through renewal.

Inside Giving Back, sub-caps apply: Working as a Practitioner is capped at 8 PDUs total (PMI considers this implicit; you're already doing it for your day job). Creating Content (articles, podcasts) is uncapped within the 25 ceiling.

Most renewals lean ~80% Education / 20% Giving Back. If you teach or mentor formally, lean into Giving Back early — those PDUs are usually undervalued.

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

Pitfall 1: Missing the Talent Triangle minimums. The most-common audit fail is hitting 60 total PDUs but coming in at 5 in one category instead of 8. PMI's CCR System shows category totals on the dashboard; check it quarterly, not at the end.

Pitfall 2: Counting your day job. "Working as a Practitioner" is capped at 8 PDUs total per cycle and requires submission with a project description — it's not auto-claimable. Many candidates assume they get 1 PDU per work-hour; they don't.

Pitfall 3: Audit documentation. PMI's audit asks for three documentation types per submission: provider verification (email or certificate), activity proof (attendance record), and a brief description of how it applied to your work. The third element is what audited candidates most often miss.
