No. Cisco doesn't charge an annual maintenance fee for CCNA. The only cost is whichever recertification path you choose — the exam fee or the CE-credit content cost. This is a meaningful cost advantage versus CISSP ($135/year) or CompTIA's $50/year CE fee.

What exactly counts as a Cisco Live session for credits?

Technical breakouts (BRKxxx codes), seminars (SEMxxx), labs (LABxxx), instructor-led workshops, and walk-in labs. General-session keynotes, partner-pitch sessions, social events, and the World of Solutions floor do not count. Cisco Live's session catalog explicitly tags CE-eligible content; check the badge at registration.

Does passing a Cisco specialist exam recertify CCNA?

Yes, most do. Specialist exams that map to the CCNP track or higher (Enterprise Wireless, Enterprise Automation, etc.) recertify CCNA. Pure Sales / Partner specialist exams do not. The Cisco recertification policy page lists qualifying exams by code — check the current list before banking on a specific exam.

What if my CCNA expires?

Cisco does not offer a grace period for CCNA. The day after expiry, you'd need to pass the current CCNA exam again to reinstate. Cisco doesn't penalise re-takers — the exam is the same, the price is the same — but the credential gap is visible on your Credly profile.

Will passing CCNP Security recertify CCNA Cyber Ops if I have both?

How CCNA recertification actually works

Path 1 — Re-take the current CCNA exam (200-301). $300 USD, ~120 minutes, ~100 questions. Cisco occasionally refreshes the exam blueprint (the 200-301 was the last major refresh); your cert is valid against your original blueprint, recertification is against the current one.

Path 2 — Pass a higher-level Cisco exam. Any current CCNP Concentration exam, CCNP Core exam, or CCIE written exam recertifies all underlying CCNA credentials. This is Cisco's stack-renew rule and the highest-leverage path for active practitioners.

Path 3 — Earn 30 Continuing Education (CE) credits through Cisco's CE Program. CE credits come from Cisco-authored training and Cisco Live sessions. This is the path most candidates assume they'll use and then abandon when they see the credit math.

The Cisco CE Program credit math

Cisco's CE Program tracks credits in the Cisco Learning Network Profile. Credits are earned strictly through Cisco-authored sources: Cisco Learning Network instructor-led courses (3–40 credits depending on length), Cisco Press authored content (8 credits per book read + assessed), Cisco Live conference sessions (1 credit per session attended on-site, sometimes 0.5 for on-demand), and selected Cisco Digital Learning Library courses.

Third-party training does NOT count, no matter how Cisco-relevant. CBT Nuggets, Pluralsight, Linkedin Learning, INE — all excellent prep, all worth zero CE credits. Cisco is explicit: CE credits require Cisco authorship.

The 30-credit target for CCNA is roughly: one Cisco Press book + assessment (8 credits) + 6 Cisco Live sessions attended (6 credits) + one ~20-hour Cisco Learning Network course (~16 credits) = 30 credits. Cost: a Cisco Press subscription ($30/month) + a Cisco Live registration (~$2200 in-person, ~$200 virtual) + the LN course ($500–$1500). Total ≈ $2500–$4000 — comfortably more than a single CCNP exam.

Why level-up to CCNP usually beats CE credits

The economics of CCNP-as-recertification are compelling for any practitioner not already chasing CE credits. A single CCNP Concentration exam costs $300 and runs ~90 minutes. Passing it: (1) recertifies your CCNA for a fresh 3-year cycle, (2) gives you the Specialist credential tied to that exam, (3) counts toward CCNP Enterprise / Security / Service Provider / Collaboration / Data Center / DevNet if paired with a CCNP Core pass.

Most CCNAs who actively work in networking find one CCNP track aligned to their day job. The exam fee is one-fifteenth the CE-credit path's cost, and you finish with a higher credential instead of just maintaining the lower one.

Caveat: CCNP exams are non-trivial. The 200-301 → CCNP jump represents a real difficulty step. Plan 200–300 hours of prep if you're starting cold; less if you've been doing the work professionally. CCIE writtens are harder still — viable but a stretch goal for CCNA-only practitioners.

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

Pitfall 1: Banking on third-party training for CE credits. Cisco's CE Program is Cisco-content-only. Many CCNAs spend two years studying with third-party material and learn the CE rule too late to pivot. If you're going the CE-credits route, audit your activities against the official Cisco CE Program eligible-activity list every 6 months.

Pitfall 2: Letting an attempted CCNP renewal lapse mid-cycle. Cisco recertification only credits when you PASS. Starting the CCNP, taking the exam, failing — none of that recerts the CCNA. The clock keeps running.

Pitfall 3: Missing the date math. Your 3-year window starts the day you passed CCNA, NOT the day of certification mailing or badge issuance. Cisco's exam-completion email is the canonical date. Schedule your recertification path with at least 90 days of buffer.
