How Network+ renewal actually works

The CE fee is billed annually through the portal and tiered by cert level; Network+ sits below Security+'s $50/year — verify the current amount in your account. As always with CompTIA, you can be CEU-complete and still lapse if the fee goes unpaid: they're separate ledgers.

The published audit rate is 2.5% per cycle, with a 30-day window to produce documentation. 30 CEUs across three years is 10 per year — comfortably covered by free vendor training for anyone working in networking.

Activity categories and caps

Five categories: a higher cert (retires the requirement), education and training (1 CEU/hour, uncapped), Activities (publishing, teaching, mentoring), conferences and webinars, and IT work experience. The last three carry per-cycle caps that scale with the 30-CEU target — smaller than Security+'s, so confirm the current Network+ caps in the CE Portal before relying on a single category.

Vendor networking training is the natural fit and lands in the uncapped education category: Cisco CCNA-track content on Cisco U, Juniper courses, Microsoft Learn networking modules, and Network+-aligned courses on the major platforms all count. This is the path of least resistance.

1 CEU = 1 hour, rounded to 0.25. Exhibit-hall and networking time at conferences doesn't count — only substantive sessions, and CompTIA's audit asks for the agenda plus a session description, not just a badge scan.

The Security+ shortcut

The single highest-leverage Network+ renewal move is earning Security+. CompTIA's stack-renew rule renews Network+ (and A+) for a fresh 3-year cycle the moment you pass Security+ — and Security+ is the most common next cert for networking pros moving toward security.

The cascade continues upward: CySA+, PenTest+, and CASP+ all renew Network+ as well, and CASP+ renews the entire stack at once (A+, Network+, Security+, CySA+, PenTest+). If you hold several CompTIA certs, timing one higher exam into the renewal year retires all of their CEU requirements together — the fee still applies per cert, but the bookkeeping vanishes.

If Network+ is your endpoint — you're staying in networking, not pivoting to security — the 30-CEU path is the right call. Don't buy a Security+ attempt purely to renew Network+.

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

Pitfall 1: Backloading CEUs into year 3. With a 1-year documentation lookback, a late-cycle scramble means producing a stack of evidence simultaneously if you're audited. Spread the 10 CEUs/year.

Pitfall 2: Assuming on-the-job knowledge counts. Re-taking the current exam version (N10-009) does restart the cycle, but everyday "I use this at work" experience doesn't — only logged, documented activities count toward CEUs.

Pitfall 3: The fee, again. Network+'s annual CE fee invoices separately from CEUs. A clean CEU portal with an unpaid fee is still a lapse in waiting.
