How CompTIA A+ renewal actually works

CEUs are tracked in the CompTIA CE Portal (your existing CompTIA account). Each activity needs a date, provider, description, and either a completion certificate or a verifiable URL. 1 CEU = 1 hour of qualifying activity, rounded to the nearest 0.25. CompTIA's published audit rate is 2.5% per cycle, with a 30-day window to produce documentation.

Because A+ is entry-level, the most common outcome is that holders never renew it directly — they earn Network+ or Security+ within the cycle, which renews A+ automatically (see below). If A+ is your terminal credential, the 20-CEU path is light: under 7 CEUs per year.

What counts, and the activity caps

The same five categories run the length of CompTIA's ladder: (1) a higher-tier CompTIA or industry certification — retires the requirement outright; (2) education and training courses with assessment — 1 CEU per hour, no overall cap (the workhorse); (3) Activities — publishing, teaching, mentoring; (4) industry conferences and webinars; (5) IT work experience. Categories 3–5 carry per-cycle caps that scale with the cert's total requirement, so A+'s caps are the smallest on the ladder — confirm the current figures in the CE Portal before banking a year of conference credit.

At a 20-CEU target the caps rarely bite: 20 hours of free vendor webinars, or a single multi-day course, covers the whole cycle. The discipline that matters is documentation, not volume — save the completion certificate at the moment you earn it, not at audit time.

Free training from Microsoft Learn, Cisco, AWS, and Google all counts as Education + Training CEUs. An A+ holder studying for their next role-based cert is usually generating more than enough A+ CEUs as a side effect.

The cleanest A+ renewal: earn the next cert

CompTIA's stack-renew rule renews every lower-tier cert you hold for a fresh 3-year cycle when you pass a higher one. A+ sits at the bottom, so virtually any other CompTIA cert renews it: Network+, Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, Cloud+, Server+, or CASP+.

For most A+ holders this is the actual renewal plan. A+ is a stepping stone; if you're on an IT career track you'll likely take Network+ or Security+ within three years anyway, and that exam pass resets the A+ clock with zero CEU bookkeeping. The annual CE fee still applies — a higher exam doesn't waive maintenance — but the CEU work disappears.

If you have no intention of climbing the stack and A+ is your endpoint, the 20-CEU path is the right one. Don't pay for a higher exam purely to renew A+ — the CEU route is far cheaper.

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

Pitfall 1: Letting A+ lapse because "Security+ covers it." Stack-renew only fires if A+ is still active when you pass the higher exam. If A+ has already expired, passing Security+ does NOT retroactively revive it — you'd re-take the A+ core exams. Earn the higher cert before A+'s expiry, not after.

Pitfall 2: Forgetting the annual CE fee. As with every CompTIA cert, you can be fully CEU-compliant and still lapse on an unpaid fee. The fee invoices separately from CEU submission.

Pitfall 3: Assuming A+ never expires. The old "good for life" A+ (issued before 2011) is exempt, but every A+ earned since is a CE-program cert on the 3-year clock. Check your issue date in the CE Portal.
