How Server+ renewal works (it's not “good for life” anymore)

1 CEU = 1 hour of qualifying activity, tracked in the CompTIA CE Portal with a date, provider, description, and either a completion certificate or a verifiable URL. CompTIA's published audit rate is 2.5% per cycle, with a 30-day window to produce documentation.

Server+ sits at the 50-CEU professional tier alongside Security+, Cloud+, and Linux+. The CE fee is separate from CEUs — a fully CEU-compliant account still lapses if the $50/year fee goes unpaid.

What counts, and the activity caps

Five categories: a higher cert (retires the requirement), education and training with assessment (1 CEU/hour, uncapped), Activities (publishing, teaching, mentoring — capped around 18 CEUs/cycle), conferences and webinars (capped around 24 CEUs/cycle), and IT work experience (capped around 18 CEUs/cycle). Confirm the current figures in the CE Portal.

Server+'s sweet spot is server and infrastructure vendor training in the uncapped education category: Microsoft Windows Server learning paths, Linux administration courses, virtualization training (VMware, Hyper-V), and storage and hardware vendor courses (Dell, HPE) all count when tied to Server+ objectives. A server admin doing the job generates these as a byproduct.

1 CEU = 1 hour, rounded to 0.25. Expo-floor and networking time at conferences doesn't count, and the audit asks for the session agenda plus a tie to Server+ objectives.

The stack-renew shortcut

CompTIA's stack-renew rule renews lower-tier certs for a fresh 3-year cycle when you pass a higher one. Server+ sits in the infrastructure line at the 50-CEU tier, so — like Cloud+ — there isn't a natural higher Server+-specific cert most holders pursue next.

The cert that cleanly renews Server+ via stack-renew is CASP+ (now CompTIA SecurityX), the Expert-tier credential that renews every professional-level cert below it. Whether a specific higher cert in another domain renews Server+ depends on CompTIA's published renewal matrix — verify the pairing before relying on it.

For most Server+ holders not chasing a higher cert, the 50-CEU path is the practical route, and server and infrastructure training makes it nearly free. Note that same-tier certs like Security+, Cloud+, and Linux+ do not renew Server+ — only a higher tier does.

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

Pitfall 1: Believing Server+ is still good for life. Only versions earned before 2011 are good for life; the current SK0-005 is on the 3-year CE cycle. Check your issue date and status in the CE Portal — assuming lifetime validity is the most common way Server+ holders let it lapse.

Pitfall 2: Forgetting the annual CE fee. As with every CE-program cert, you can be fully CEU-compliant and still lapse on the unpaid $50/year fee. It invoices separately from CEU submission.

Pitfall 3: Assuming a sibling cert covers it. Security+, Cloud+, and Linux+ are the same 50-CEU tier and don't renew Server+. Only a higher-tier cert (CASP+/SecurityX) does.
